THE LUNAR PROJECT
Started in 2019, The Lunar Project is an exhibition series that celebrates Asian artists who celebrate the Lunar New Year. Artists are asked to select one animal from the Asian zodiac to be inspired from and create a work of art. This exhibition will features multi-disciplinary art, craft, and design with every year having a different thematic focus. Follow the project on Instagram.
Programming
Concurrent programming has included storytelling for youth, artist talks, traditional dances, workshops, and public and private tours. Every exhibition has didactics for each artists explaining their inspiration as well as connection with their culture; an exhibition statement sets the tone of the show, including the theme of the particular year.
Dinners
Every exhibition site has an intimate dinner with a local Asian restaurant. Guests dine off of a custom made ceramic dish made by an AAPI artist and that they take home at the end of the night. Attendees have intimate discussions with a few of the exhibiting artists to learn more about the cultural heritage of Lunar New Year.
Network
A core goal of The Lunar Project is to connect AAPI artists together. By hosting exhibitions, it is the hope that the network of artists can build and become a resource to each other. Other networks that exist include Rolodex, by Namita Gupta Wiggers and has been integral to finding artists for this project.
